Hasbro flew a field of competitors to New York to launch a new blaster and crown a champion. I won it, took home ten thousand dollars and a golden blaster, and then could not tell a soul for three months.

How it went
Nerf built the event around the launch of the Ultra One, so they invited a field of competitors and ran a bracket for a title nobody had ever held, because there had never been a solo Nerf champion before. I had spent that year training for it and lost sixty pounds getting ready.
It came down to three of us. Aaron Esser, Frank Cooper and me, in a sudden-death round where whoever hit the most targets took it. I hit the most targets.
The strange part came afterward. The result was under embargo, so I flew home a champion and told nobody until January, when the news finally broke in my own hometown paper. Six weeks after that I was back at AT&T Stadium running the fifth Epic Nerf Battle.
